The more I thought about Books Under the Tree, the more that I thought that this was a great idea for several reasons.
First, we wrap and deliver almost all of our gifts at Thanksgiving. So, we don't really have presents under our tree. An unintended benefit of this is that our kids are not always looking at the presents and wondering what is in them. Although it works out really well, it does seem a little odd not to have anything under the tree. The wrapped books fill this role.
Second, this doesn't cost anything at all. We simply wrapped the books that we already had.
Third, the kids get to open a "gift" every night. They enjoy doing this even though the books inside are ones that we already had. There is just something fun about anticipating which one is inside.
Fourth, Tom is involved. So many of our activities happen while he is at work. This is one that we can easily do as a complete family at the end of the day. All four of us (plus a couple of dogs) sit together on the sofa and read. I love ending our day this way.
